Why are there so many risk genes for autism?  Can we explain the large number based on a commonality?  Despite the push for heterogeneity, our latest result suggests that a major reason why certain genes may act as risk factors for autism is the presence of large transposable elements within them. These elements makes the genes containing them highly susceptible to mutations.
